Deposit bad naira notes in bank before Monday - CBN tells Nigerians

Nigerians have been directed by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to deposit bad naira notes in banks before Monday September 2. 

CBN said it is recalling the bad currencies to improve the overall quality of the Naira notes in circulation. Naira notes expected to be deposited in banks include those which are weak and could easily tear at further handling or processing, mutilated notes that are partially or permanently damaged but which clearly still has more than half of its original size together.

The announcement was made in an email GTBank sent out to its customers on Friday August 30.

It read “Important CBN Notice on Naira Notes”
As part of its efforts to improve the overall quality of the Naira notes in circulation, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has introduced the Clean Note Policy and Banknotes Fitness Guidelines.
What does this mean for you?
If you have in your possession, overused or mutilated Naira notes, you are required by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Clean Note Policy to deposit such notes at any (bank) branch near you on or before Monday, September 2, 2019.
Please note that overused notes include any Naira note that is now weak to such an extent that it could easily tear at further handling or processing.
Mutilated notes include any Naira note that has been partially or permanently damaged, but which clearly still has more than half of its original size together.
As Nigerians, it is our patriotic and collective responsibility to handle the Naira with care; and as your Bank, we urge you to comply with this directive in order to improve the quality of our national currency.

Crowds gather as pastor allegedly cures mentally unstable man and shaves his head (video)

A large crowd gathered today at Choba Junction in Port Harcourt as a pastor allegedly cured a mentally unstable man.

In a video obtained by LIB, the pastor is seen with a rosary around his neck as he confronted the fully-clothed mentally unstable man.

After a while, a crowd gathered as the ill man appeared to regain his senses and the pastor shaved his hair, making him look presentable.

Witnesses can be heard making several comments in the crowd. Some said the man, who was now topless, had become mentally unstable as a result of smokiing Indian hemp.

Dambazau’s son sacked as House of Rep member by Kano Tribunal

Shamsuddeen Dambazau, the son of former Minister of Interior, Abdulrahman Dambazau has been sacked as the member representing Sumaila/Takai Federal Constituency by an election petition tribunal which sat in Kano on Friday August 30. 

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was ordered to issue certificate of return for the constituency to Surajo Kanawa, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Shamsuddeen came second in the APC primaries but became the party's flagbearer in the House of Representatives election after a Federal High Court in Kano disqualified Kawu Sumaila, following the provision of evidence that the former presidential aide contested for Kano South senatorial ticket on the platform of the APC.

Nigerian prodigal son becomes a PhD holder, shares his inspirational story

A Nigerian PhD holder has shared his inspirational story just after bagging the highest university degree from an American university. 

Reflecting on how far he has come, Ezekiel Olusola Adekanmbi disclosed that he grew up without his father as he died shortly after he was born. He further disclosed that he became a prodigal son by occasionally moving out of their home when he was just 10, sleeping in the markets and sometimes in the mosque or the church beside their house.

Things however changed after he learnt how to play the piano at the age of 14. According to the Nigerian man who bagged a PhD in Chemical Engineering, he gave his life to Christ at that age and everything turned out right.  Adekanmbi also dedicated his certificate to his mother who despite making a profit of N120 ($0.3) per day from her business, trained him and his 4 siblings beyond Secondary School.

He wrote;

GOD HAS A PLAN FOR EVERY CREATURE, ESPECIALLY ME!
I received my PhD certificate in the mail today and could not hold back my tears. I kept reflecting on how my mother would make me hawk 2 dozens of bread every morning before heading to middle and high schools. She didn't have money but wanted the 5 of us to go to school. I grew up without a father. In fact, I saw my father only 3 times before he died. It is not good to be born in a poor home neither is it good to grow up without a father.

Ebola death toll crosses 2,000 in DR Congo

The year-long Ebola outbreak in Democratic Republic of Congo, has climbed above 2,000 as confirmed by the government's data released on Friday August 30. 

Health officials in DR Congo said there have been “2,006 deaths (1,901 confirmed and 105 probable)” since August 2018. The disclosure came barely a day after a 9-year-old girl died in neighbouring Uganda after testing positive to the virus. The little girl that died on Thursday evening had crossed the border from neighbouring DRC.

The Ebola outbreak which was declared officially in August 2018, is the second deadliest on record behind the 2013-2016 epidemic in West Africa that killed more than 11,300 people.

Reuters reported that this is Congo’s 10th Ebola outbreak, but the first in the densely forested hillside provinces of North Kivu and Ituri where militia-led violence and ethnic killing have undermined security in certain areas for decades.

Rochas Okorocha, the immediate past governor of Imo State has said that his successor, Governor Emeka Ihedioha, can’t order his arrest.

Okorocha in a statement issued by his media aide, Sam Onwuemeodo, said that the arrest order was an ”open invitation to anarchy or fracas in the state. ”

The immediate past governor said that the call to arrest him by the secretary to the state government, Uche Onyeagocha, was insensitive.

Okorocha said, “The arrest order is an open invitation to anarchy or fracas in the State because Imo people will always come out to defend Okorocha. It also shows insensitivity on the side of the government in the State because such arrest order was uncalled for and Onyeaguocha has no right to issue an order of that nature.
 “The order only adds to their continued disrespect for the former governor, which is a very bad precedent. After May 29, 2019, Owelle Okorocha relocated to Abuja. He was in Abuja when the recovery committee members slapped his daughter, Mrs. Uloma Rochas Nwosu, invaded and looted the shops of his wife, Nneoma and that of the daughter too. And just the previous week, Onyeaguocha invaded the private guest house of the former governor.
“The government had written petitions to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission. And these agencies have begun investigations, yet they do not want these bodies to do their work which also arose from their petitions.

He continued “The same Thursday, Onyeaguocha led thugs to Sam Mbakwe airport and said they were waiting for the former governor. This is the first government in the history of the State that is fanning the ember of anarchy.  
“They were rattled the day Okorocha came into the State for the first time after May 29, 2019 and he was received by a mammoth crowd. It then occurred to them that their blackmail and lies have not affected the love of Imo people for their beloved former governor. That is the reason for all these insensitive actions.  
“Okorocha will be in Imo whenever he deems it necessary to come, especially when he had transformed the State as governor and left it better than he met it. And had invested heavily in the State long before his governorship with his wife and children also having their businesses relocated to Owerri because they believe strongly in the State. Nigerians of goodwill should disregard the arrest order. It became void on arrival.”

EFCC arrests Nigerian internet fraudster wanted by FBI

Ibrahim Magu, the Acting Chairman of the Economic Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has said that one the most wanted suspect by the Federal Bureau of investigation, Oyediran Joseph, has been arrested in Ilorin, the Kwara State Capital for his roles in internet fraud.

Magu disclosed this in Ilorin on Friday 30th of August 2019 at a press conference to explain the EFCC/FBI Collaboration in the fight against internet fraud and cyber crime. The EFCC Chairman who was represented by Ilorin Zonal Head of the Commission, Mr Isyaku Sharu said the anti-graft body has been supportive to the activities of FBI and every other foreign counterpart whose responsibility is similar or analogous to the Commission.

"Three weeks ago, the US authority had written to us for assistance in tracking and possible arrest and prosecution of two most wanted FBI suspects in Nigeria. Investigation conducted by the EFCC revealed that Joseph had benefited about N60 million from the loot via western union transfers," he said.

Sharu said that within seven months of operation, the Ilorin Zonal office independently arrested over 50 suspected internet fraudsters, secured conviction of 25, and got forfeiture of their exotic cars. He said that the money acquired from the fraudsters was millions of naira and all gorfeired to federal the government in line with court judgement.

The Zonal Head said that four properties were linked to some of these cybercrime suspects, located in choice areas in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti state.

"These properties include Supermarket, Plaza, and so on, and the conservative value of these properties cannot be less than N800 million to N1 billion."

Senator Shekarau slams Governor Wike over mosque demolition and declaring Rivers state a Christian state

Senator Ibrahim Shekarau on Friday August 30, slammed Governor Nyesom Wike over the demolition of a mosque in Port Harcourt and declaring Rivers State which he governs a Christian state. 

Though the Rivers state government denied carrying out the demolition, the former Kano State Governor and Senator Representing Kano Central Senatorial District called on all right-thinking Nigerians to condemn the act which he described as "reckless".

He said “All rationale and conscious citizens of this great country, Nigeria should join in condemning the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike for recklessly demolishing the Rainbow Town Central Mosque located at the Trans-Amadi Area of Port Harcourt and for irresponsibly declaring Rivers State a “Christian State,” and claiming to owe no apology to anyone.
“Muslims and other right-thinking and peace-loving citizens of this country should come together to condemn, in strongest terms, this irresponsible, reckless, rabble-rousing Governor whose apparent aim is to ignite a religious conflagration, the kind of which has never been seen in recent times.
“If a Muslim Governor were to come out openly and declare his state a “Muslim State” and proceed to demolish a church for any reason, all hell would have since broken loose in Nigeria, and sections of the Christian community would have since rushed to the “international community” and even the United Nations seeking protection against Muslims.
“The action of Governor Wike is a pointer to his being induced by other than rationale brain waves, as no leader in his right senses would contemplate stoking these embers of discord in a country so religiously, ethnically and regionally charged as Nigeria.
“We must repeat that were a Muslim Governor to be reckless to utter even half of what Governor Wike uttered, the fragile peace holding in this country would have since been jeopardized because of the intolerant nature of a section of the citizenry.
“Yet here we are, with the added tragedy of a cohort Christian clergy lining up to bless and endorse Governor Wike’s action."

Senator Shekarau added that Nigeria belongs to everyone and no state in Nigeria can claim to be mono-religious. He went on to name some Rivers State indigenes who are Muslims.

“Nigeria belongs to all, and no state in Nigeria could claim to be mono religious.
“It only takes a responsible leadership to carry everybody along. When I held sway as governor of Kano State between 2003 and 2011, we encouraged and guided the people to lead their lives according to the tenets of Islamic Law (Shari’ah).
”But we neither became power-drunk to demolish Churches nor disregarded the provisions of section 10 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to declare Kano an Islamic State.
“Our fair dealings with every section of the community earned us commendation, even from Kano State Chapter and National Body of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) at different occasions. These Christian leaders are a still alive today to attest to my claim.
“It may interest Wike to learn that Mr. Tala Ilo from Bayelsa State and Mr. Chris Chibuzor Azuka from Anambra State, (both, born-again Christians) were special advisers in my administration.
“Wike’s claim that Rivers is a Christian State is pathological lies. It suggests that not only are the people of Rivers State 100% Christians but Muslims and adherents of other religions from other parts of Nigeria cannot make Rivers State their home.
” It also insinuates that Rivers State operates a government, a constitution of its own, different from the Nigerian Nation.
“It means Rivers State does not recognize or protect the interests of people like Alabo Mujahid Dokubo Asari, Alhaji Isa Boaima, Alhaji Sani Okiri, Alhaji Ahmed Sani Pe, Alhaji Abdul’aziz Pepple, Alhaji Sulaiman Akani, Alhaji Ibrahim Orlu, Alhaji Musa Brown, Chief Hassan Douglas and Alhaji Mustapha Wakama who are all Muslims and productive citizens of Rivers State" he wrote.

"Bride price is not Christian" Freeze says as he reveals no man will pay a single Kobo as bride price to marry his daughters

Daddy Freeze has condemned the payment of bride price and has said no daughter of his "will be bought or sold like a commodity".

The media personality who has one biological daughter and other adopted daughters from his partner, said bride price is biblical but not "Christian". He went on to add that he hopes for a world where the payment of bride price will be abolished.

Ubi Franklin responds as his first baby mama says she plays the role of father and mother in their child's life

Ubi Franklin has been forced to issue a response after his first baby mama made a statement that gave the impression he's a deadbeat father.

Jennifer, while celebrating Zaneta, the child she had with Ubi Franklin, said she "plays the role of father and mother" in their daughter's life.

Ubi quickly responded to Jennifer's statement by revealing he's not in America, so cannot always be present to play his fatherly role.

He, however, pointed out that his baby mama did not say that he doesn't provide for their daughter.

That woman did not say I don’t take care of my daughter.

Four South African police officers arrested over gruesome murder of Nigerian man, Pius Ezekwem

The South African government have arrested four police officers over the gruesome murder of  a Nigerian businessman residing in their country, Pius Ezekwem.

46-year-old Pius who runs a chain of bread and breakfast guesthouses in the Eastern Cape Province in South Africa, was killed last weekend in front of his family members in his home by eight police officers. The police officers picked him up from a Nigerian eatery where he was hanging out with other Nigerians, forcefully took him to his home and afterwards shot him dead. Read initially story here.

Initially, no police officer was arrested in connection with the killing of Ezekwem. However, after a protest from the Nigerian government, four police officers have now been arrested and will be charged to court.

Shocking footage shows moment woman was forced to give birth alone in jail cell while guards ignored her

CCTV footage shows the moment a woman was forced to give birth in a prison cell by herself "while prison guards ignored her".

Diana Sanchez, 26, is seen writhing in agony and screaming as she lay on her back "on a cold hard bench, feet away from a toilet" as she pushed.

She had been locked up in a Denver County jail two weeks before on identity-theft related charges. She then went into labour on July 31, 2018, and gave birth unaided.

Six hours before she gave birth to her son Jordan, Sanchez claimed she told guards that she was going into labour. She alleged in a legal complaint that she told prison deputies and nurses "at least eight times" that she was experiencing contractions.

But the prison officials ignored her and she was left screaming in agony for hours without any anesthesia.

It was only after she gave birth that a male nurse, who was allegedly standing outside the cell watching in, is seen walking in to pick up the newborn son.

Mari Newman, Sanchez's lawyer, told KDVR: "(He) picks up the baby as though he's never seen one in his life. I mean, the lack of any sort of compassion is astounding."

Sanchez claimed that is was only after she gave birth that an ambulance was called for her.

Speaking days after the birth Sanchez said: "That pain, it's just, it's indescribable. What hurts me more is the fact that nobody cared."

On Wednesday lawyers filed a lawsuit claiming prison staff were aware Sanchez was giving birth and decided not to take her to hospital because it was "inconvenient".

A Denver Sheriff's Department spokesperson told BBC that Denver Health Medical provides "comprehensive medical care at both of our jails" and that professionals are "housed in the jail facilities and have dedicated medical units" to provide care.

The statement said: "We empathise with anyone who is in jail while pregnant, including Ms Sanchez.

"Ms Sanchez was in the medical unit and under the care of Denver health medical professionals at the time she gave birth."

They said the department had changed its policies to ensure pregnant inmates are immediately transported to hospital.

President Buhari says the 77 Nigerians recently arrested by the US Federal Bureau of Intelligence FBI, for online scam, do not represent the values of majority of Nigerians.

The President broke his silence on the arrest of the Nigerians when he met with leaders of the Nigerian Community living in Japan on the sidelines of the Seventh Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD7).

“Let me also say that there are few Nigerians in the Diaspora that are giving us a bad name by engaging in criminal activities. These Nigerians are a minority, they do not represent the values of our country, and I plead with them to change their ways.
We will not condone any crime whether at home or abroad, and we will also not allow these Nigerians define us as a people with reputation for criminality.” he said

Urging Nigerians in Japan to be good ambassadors of their fatherland, President Buhari said

“I am personally very happy that there are millions of Nigerians all over the world, like you here, who are truly making us proud''.

Describing majority of the over 17 million Nigerians in Diaspora as the face of Nigeria globally and our ambassadors for good, the President noted that many of our Diasporans, like your good selves here today, have excelled in various fields of endeavor, both professionally and individually.

“You have also made significant and overwhelmingly positive contributions to your Nigerian and international host communities. You have continually been a positive bridge between Nigeria and the world. It is not an easy feat and we commend you, salute your courage and efforts.

Japan is at the cutting edge of technology and efficiency, two very important attributes that can play a role in Nigeria and improve our capacity for development,” President Buhari urged members of his audience to continue to contribute their quota by helping to develop their host country and Nigeria as well, adding: “I look forward to your inborn gift, ability, and capacity in taking up this challenge.”

Commending many of them who are already “positively impacting the Nigerian economy through financial home remittances, promoting international trade in Nigerian commodities, our music, culture, tourism, sports, and education, while also helping to establish industries in Nigeria,” the President urged them “to encourage legitimate Japanese entrepreneurs to come and invest in Nigeria.”

According to him

“We are continually working to create the necessary enabling environment for investors to thrive, through improvements in our Ease of Doing Business practices, providing security, diversification of the economy, infrastructure and fighting corruption. We have put in place the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERPG) to put the country on a path of sustained recovery and growth.”

Explaining the rationale for his regular meetings with Nigerians abroad and the establishment of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, President Buhari said:

“As you are aware, I have regularly held town hall meetings with Nigerians in the Diaspora on all my foreign engagements be they in Europe, Asia, America and Africa.
“At these fora, I have always, appealed to our citizens to be our good ambassadors, observe the laws of your host countries, excel in whatever you do legitimately, and also remember us at home (Nigeria). I have established the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission specifically to engage with you, signifying a coordinated attempt by our administration to increase the involvement of our Diaspora in our national development.
“Collectively, your resources, skills, and talents will be a positive force for our country which can help accelerate our national growth and development.”

A popular Imo State thug identifed as Jasper Ndubuaku received the beating of his life today after leading a task force to invade Rochas foundation premises in Owerri.

According to reports, 'Jasper led a task force team to storm the residence of the immediate past governor, Rochas Okorocha but he was met with a strong resistance by angry youths and neighbours in the area who descended on them heavily'.

Other members of the task force escaped but Jasper wasn't so lucky.
